Termites 101: What is an Active Termite Infestation?

Termites 101

Recently in this space, we discussed the common signs that a given property has been treated for termites in the recent past. This is just one of a few possible termite-related situations that can be present on a given property, and another notable example here is the active termite infestation – what does this term refer to?

At A-1 Exterminators, we’re here to provide a wide range of termite inspections and termite control services as part of our broad pest control solutions for clients around Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Sandy, West Valley City and nearby areas. Here are some basics on how professionals view the term “active termite infestation” generally, plus some possible signs of an active infestation and what you can do about it.

Active Vs. Inactive Infestation

There can sometimes be misconceptions about these terms in the world of termites, where some people mistakenly believe that a termite infestation can become inactive simply due to termites “moving on” or a decreasing number of live termites seen by the homeowner or inspector. Unfortunately, this is not the case – a termite infestation remains active until it has been fully eradicated and no further signs of live termites are present.

Active termite infestations refer to any situation where there are still live termites present in the structure. This could mean termites actively feeding on wood, creating new tunnels or nests, or just being generally present in the area.

On the flip side, only a termite infestation that has received a known treatment with an active guarantee can be considered as inactive. This means that the termites have been eliminated and there are no signs of further activity.

However, even an inactive infestation can become reactivated if proper prevention measures are not taken. It is important for homeowners to regularly inspect their property for any signs of termite activity and address any potential issues promptly.

Possible Signs of Active Termite Infestation

There are a number of indicators that can help determine if a termite infestation is active. These signs include:

Discarded Wings

One of the most obvious signs of an active termite infestation is the presence of discarded termite wings. As termites swarm and mate, they will shed their wings and leave them behind as evidence.

This can often be seen near windowsills, doors, and other entry points. If you notice a pile of discarded wings in your home, it is important to take action immediately.

Mud Tubes

Another telltale sign of an active termite infestation is the presence of mud tubes. These small tunnels made out of soil and wood particles are used by termites to travel from their colony to a food source.

Mud tubes can often be found along the foundation of a building or on exterior walls. They provide shelter for termites as they make their way into your home to feed.

Fecal Pellets

In other cases, you may not see any visible signs of termites in your home. However, if you notice small piles of wood-colored pellets around your property, this could be a sign of termite activity.

These fecal pellets are actually the waste products of termites and can indicate an infestation within your walls or furniture. They are often mistaken for sawdust and brushed away without much thought, but it is important to have them properly identified by a professional.

Damaged Wood

You may also come across visible signs of termite damage in your home. This could include sagging or hollow-sounding wood, wood that easily crumbles when touched, or visible tunnels and galleries within the wood.

Termites typically feed on cellulose found in wood, so they can cause significant structural damage if left undetected. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to have a professional inspect your home for termites and recommend proper treatment.

Swarmers

Swarmers are winged termites that leave their nest to mate and establish new colonies. They are often mistaken for flying ants due to their similar appearance. However, unlike ants which have bent antennae, swarmers have straight antennae. Spotting swarmers around your home is a clear indication of termite activity and an immediate cause for concern.

Professional Assistance

If you suspect termite activity in your home, it is important to seek professional assistance as soon as possible.
