Pest HVAC Damage and Winter Protection Methods, Part 2

HVAC Damage

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the top pests to consider when it comes to preventing HVAC damage over the winter. Certain pests are more likely than others to invade areas of your HVAC system, particularly the outdoor AC unit, causing costly damage if they aren’t properly controlled.

At A-1 Exterminators, we’re here to provide quality pest control services throughout the year, including in this area. We offer everything from insect control to anti-bird barrier services, plus a wide range of expertise on specific areas like protecting your HVAC system from pest damage at any point in the season. Here are some general tips we can provide you on preventing HVAC-related damage due to winter pests.

Ductwork Gap Sealing

For starters, one of the simplest ways for pests – particularly rodents, which are the highest risk this time of year – to get into your HVAC system is through openings in your ducts. You might be shocked at how small a mouse or rat can make itself; even small cracks or openings pose a major risk here.

For this reason, take some time before winter hits to move through all the visible areas in your ductwork. If you notice even the smallest openings, seal them up with caulk or another strong material. Not only are you preventing pests from invading in this manner, you’re also sealing potential air loss areas and possibly saving yourself a significant sum on your monthly heating bill.

Vent and Flue Covers

Another basic coverage area to keep an eye on is vents and flues, which are passage areas from outdoors to inside your home. If you have exposed vents, it’s vital to install pest-proof covers and screens for flues – these will keep everything from insects and rodents to birds and other varmints from getting inside.

Outdoor AC Unit

In addition to indoor areas, the outdoor AC unit is an area to keep an eye on. Don’t let weeds, grass or shrubs grow too high around the outdoor unit, as these attract pests. Also take the time to clean the unit before winter gets into full swing, particularly if there’s any excess moisture or puddling from recent rain. If possible, sitting your unit on a slab above the ground will prevent animals from getting into it.

Professional Assistance

Finally, it’s a great idea to have a professional pest treatment done in advance of winter, especially if pests have damaged your HVAC system in winters past. Our technicians can provide everything from pesticides to advanced techniques to ward off pests. We also recommend an annual HVAC maintenance service to ensure your system is sealed and working efficiently.
