Service
Bird deterrent program — layout design and installation of wind-driven reflectors
Scope
About 65 wind-driven reflectors placed throughout the refinery | layout designed by A-1
The Problem
HF Sinclair needed to discourage birds from roosting and nesting on structures throughout its Salt Lake City refinery. A refinery is a large, complex site where birds have no shortage of places to land, and where droppings and nesting material on equipment and walkways are a maintenance and safety concern.
Netting every structure wasn’t practical. The site needed a deterrent approach that could cover a wide area and be installed within a working refinery’s safety and access rules.

Our Solution
Designed the layout. A-1 surveyed where birds were landing and laid out a deterrent plan for the refinery, deciding where each unit would do the most good.
Wind-driven reflectors. We installed about 65 wind-driven reflectors throughout the site. They turn in the wind and throw moving flashes of light, which birds avoid, with no power supply needed.
Installed under refinery conditions. The plan was carried out under challenging regulatory and practical conditions, working within the refinery’s safety requirements and around an operating site.

The Result
About 65 wind-driven reflectors now cover the refinery in a layout designed for where birds were actually landing. HF Sinclair got a site-wide deterrent program planned and installed by one contractor, within the rules of an operating refinery.
Why This Job Says Something About A-1
Not every bird problem is solved with netting. On a site this large and this regulated, the job was to choose the right tool, design where it goes, and install it safely inside an operating refinery. A-1 handled the plan and the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are wind-driven bird reflectors?
They are deterrents that turn in the wind and reflect moving flashes of light, which birds avoid. They need no power, which makes them practical across large industrial sites.
When are reflectors a better choice than netting?
When birds are landing across a wide area rather than nesting inside one enclosed space, a planned layout of deterrents can cover far more ground than netting could.
Can you work inside refineries and other regulated sites?
Yes. We planned and installed this project within an operating refinery’s safety and access requirements.
